EYES NOTES AND INSTRUCTIONS

M Arch Design Studios B C D E

semester 2  2011

EYES is Everyone’s Year End Show, in the ABP building. It shows design studio works from all the courses in the Faculty. This year, the M Arch studios are to be exhibited on floor 3 and floor 2, with some spaces elsewhere (see the full list below).

The exhibition opens Friday evening 11th November and closes on 5-00pm Friday 18th November 2011.

The seminar rooms and nearby corridors will have our usual grey or white pin-boards and tables for display. Benches will be cleared.

Each student is guaranteed a ½ screen and ½ table for display. Any other way of showing the work is OK, as long as it makes sense and we (the staff) can tell what work is by who for our moderation sessions on the 15th and 16th November. Initial installation of screens and tables will be by the Faculty.

Students are to install work on the 11th November. Installation of a selection of projects, selected by studio leaders, is planned for the Atrium. Studio leaders are to email the name and student number of the author of their chosen project (one per studio) to Alex Selenitsch, who will compile a list and send on to Rosanna Verde, who will then contact students and facilitate the installation of their projects in the Atrium.

Moderation sessions will be held on the 15th and 16th November, using the pinned up work as reference. Students are not required to do any kind of presentation for moderation; staff will refer to what is there in the rooms.

After EYES, work must be picked up by students. All work must be removed by 9th December. After the 9th December, any remaining work will be thrown out.

EYES EXHIBITS – SCHEDULE OF ROOMS

east/west locations indicative only – in principle you have ½ of the room + corridor, or for rooms 207 and 211, ¼ of the room + corridor.

Journals!

A+T,

I was just wondering what our options are for the Journals. If we want to submit a hard copy...is that okay? Would you give them back to us at some point? Or are you requring digital?

Thanks!

CONGRATULATIONS + Final Details + Reflective Piece

P {margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;}
HI Everyone!

Congratulations on all of you that submitted on time Friday. We hope you all had a good weekend!

We just wanted to give you a bit of advice for the final submission this Thursday 3 November, and especially some extra advice to do a reflective piece for your journal.

Reflective Journal

As you know we haven't placed much emphasis on this. At this late stage you should be bringing a journal together by adding headings and filling in gaps to a compilation of your work. We would have liked you to be at least twice-weekly engaging with your design process reflectively through the journal but are aware that this has not been the focus of our semester and do not expect very detailed journals.

We recommend you all write a one-page A3 equivalent reflective piece to finish off your journal. This might be text or even a reworked image, drawing, or series of diagrams. This is not compulsory but definitely recommended.

Think about what worked/didn't work in your design process, what did you learn? what did you repeat from old habits? if you had the opportunity, what would you do differently?

You should be looking back over your work reflectively as a wrap-up of the semester.

Folio (CD)

Please compile a folio of all your work over the semester. Preferred format: digital A3 landscape, PDF. You should each submit one CD of your work neatly compiled, including presentation panels, folio and reflective piece and any other work you see fit.

Final Boards

Please have all of your boards complete, clean, with your name and the studio name. It would be also good to mount at least 3 of your boards for the judging panel and exhibition. You can include as much as you like for the final presentation however we can only admit 3 boards per student for the exhibition and judging. We would like each group to also print one succinct A0 (portrait) of their precinct vision and mount it.

Final Model(s)

If you have one it is welcome and can be entered for the exhibition and judging panel.

Final Verbal Presentation

Prepare, prepare, prepare. We recommend you all spend at least 2-3 hours preparing for this, practice with some friends/family that do not know your work.  Relate what you say to drawings/models and plan some of the responses to likely questions. The way you speak about and exhibit your work verbally can make a very big difference to the way that is percieved. Practice will give you confidence!

I'm attaching a copy of the original studio outline, one-pager and briefs for your reference. It would probably be a good idea to re-review this document.

Final Presentation

The final presentations will be this Thursday 3rd November, from 15:30 - 20:00 in two sessions. They will be in the South Corridor, 3rd Floor of ABP. If anyone has any lamps that would be useful. We will send out the running sheet shortly and name the guests. We expect a brief 5 minute presentation of your group vision then individual presentations and feedback of about 18 minutes each student. There will be no digital presentations.

Exhibition

We will be exhibiting in the Cathedral North Transept from Friday 4th, at noon, till Friday 11th (bump out). We will be sending a formal invitation out that you can use to invite your family and friends etc. We will need help setting this up. Can you please set aside some time to help, this is a great opportunity for you to present your work in public and we want to make the most of this special location.

Judging Panel

These are the current guests confirmed who will be meeting to award prizes on the 10th from the Richard Falkinger Heritage Trust, as part of the Lord Mayors Charitable Fund. They will be judging independently of the tutors over a 2 hour lunch. They will be devising their own judging criteria and method. Please do not get in contact with any of them, it is important that this process is independent, there are often good surprises.

Final Ceremony

As a bit of a formal finish and celebration we are planning a small ceremony in the Cathedral on Thursday 10th November 18:00-20:00. We will be sending out formal invites to you, our guests and all students and staff in ABP. You are also welcome to bring your family and friends. This will however be a relatively small occasion with only a few drinks and a few plates of food. If anyone wants to bring a plate extra you are welcome. Party will be after this at a different location!

Please help Tim and I this week to have it all as smooth as possible. We are working hard for you!

congrats and...
Good luck everyone!

Exhibition Display Workshop

Hi everyone!

Hope you are all having some deep sleep this weekend! Has been very exciting to see all of your work being posted. The next couple of weeks are going to be great! We will be setting up the exhibition at the Cathedral on Friday morning. We need to have a workshop to modify last years cardboard display easels and construct a few new ones. All for recycling!! I am only available on Tuesday afternoon this week. I know the cup is on but i have no time on Monday or Wednesday/Thursday to help. It will take probably 4-5 people around 3 hours i would imagine. Could we start at 3:30pm and go until 6:30pm on Tuesday? See you all soon, let me know tomorrow.

Cheers,

Tim
