MORE PEOPLE = MORE MUSIC
By Jane Clark
The untitled music installation surrounding you, by musician, producer, engineer Christopher Townend, was commissioned by David Walsh specifically for the Mona tunnel. Hidden from view, built into the floor of this 37-metre-long underground concrete tube, are 48 custom-built speakers. As Townend explains, each 700mm section of flooring has load cells underneath that detect your presence and trigger parts of the composition based on where you are in the tunnel. So, more people = more music. The sound produced then interacts with the tunnel's resonance.
Chris has a strong musical background performing in his own groups – Sun, Kiss My Poodles Donkey and Mayo, among others. Myles Mumford, Melbourne-based Tasmanian composer and engineer, assisted him with technical aspects at Mona.
Sometimes, to give people in the Library a bit of quiet time, Townend and Mumford’s creation is turned off. Like much of what goes on here at Mona, this work is quite likely to evolve over time.
