Feedback to Ben1

Ben
I thoroughly agree with your email below. Do each dot point in great detail.

I've made a few comments. I would add that my sense is you need to consider it with all the activity of the day and night, rain and sun, holiday workday and respond with design. It's all a bit too clean and ''A'architectural' at the moment. - obviously because the design isn't very old yet.
It's looking pretty exciting nonetheless.
The only radical change I'd consider is a stronger relationship to the physical characteristics of the interior and exterior of the gothic cathedral.
It is a religious moral site with deep symbology.

Hi Ammon,

Attached is my pres, and in the following email is the group pres. The group did a fair bit of work would be interested to hear your further comments.

For my personal proposal:

- Want to heavily get into materiality and structural system.
- Develop some images of the interior spaces and moods.
- Deal with planning issues further.
- Really develop a strong connection between the ground plane and my building.
- Considering my built proposal is a week and a half old, I think it's not too bad, but I have a long way to go.

Cheers,

Ben.

Jack, I think the project is finally getting there.
Add a whole lot more detail to the drawings and it will sing.
Work on structure
I think a really developed sense of the difference between a conference centre and theatre would be worthwhile as a masters project. Do research
The auditorium needs a lot of work.
Consider a future conference centre that would not get outdated quickly but be a message of future thinking with maturity. Step back and consider the message you are projecting in the aesthetic.
Good work. More detail

Jade feedback

Hi jade,
Brief comments, happy with how you're going on the whole,
And, we spent heaps of time together last Tuesday, which I'm sure you are still working through
Feel free to continue hand drawing
Develop the dome thing, make it work 100% including water, structure, day night light, security, safety, streetscape, maintenance etc etc

Work up Swanston street more.

The interior materiality/form/pattern needs a lot of work. It's looking like a modern box, which I think argues with the ambience of your project. Your project needs to realise it's gothic heart - keep going

And now the ominous question: what's an intimate public space?

Feedback for queenie

Still a project with potential but not answering the tough questions:
- sleeping at the cathedral : meaning? homelessness?
- community connection spaces

There are some elements here that with a few steps could be amazing but are yet to be developed.

You should strongly develop the typical floor plans much more.
Facade needs work and detailing - but also a lot of shaping and patterning which corresponds to the context
Your response to the site is lacking other than a solid sense of scale

I think you need a massive input of ambition on this project, ground floor looking good but the rest doesn't realise it is next to a cathedral!!! And THIS one more specifically

Feedback euric

Euric,
It's starting to get interesting in the close, but the main part of your project - the scaffolding is still at step one in terms of development.

You need to put so much more detail into your drawings. You can obviously quickly produce shapes and layouts, but the depth of thinking stops at 1/200

Develop the spire more.
Develop auditorium more.
Develop structure more.

Presentation Formats - Group + Individual

Hi, just asking the other groups about your group vision formats.. bcos ours is A0 landscape, but I noticed that Riv's group is portrait?

Also, individual boards, is 3xA0 Max, im guessing portrait? separate boards or banner? Can we discuss please, would help heaps. Thanks

Week 10

Players,

Enjoyed seeing your individual progress on Thursday! Your projects are getting really exciting! On the other hand, most of your group progress was disappointing. It was not that we were expecting great leaps forward but… you had received great feedback from the interim and had an opportunity to expand and refine. The group vision will be printed and presented for the final submission and exhibition along with all of your individual projects. We suggest that you attempt to address aspects of the feedback in your final group presentations. Remember, all of your individual projects will be designed for 2015 with your future vision in mind. The connection between your design and the proposed future is paramount.

The feedback was fantastic on Thursday, I can see that you have all taken something important from it by your words for Ammon. If we have a general comment at the moment it is that your projects still need to reveal their true qualities. There are project specific problems that you are each dealing with and they will be resolved but in the end if nobody can see what your architecture is really about then it will remain unknown.

Some of you have changed your projects significantly in the last couple of weeks.  Do you need to revise your brief? See if there are things you need to add/subtract from the brief?

We are in the last three weeks so I think you all know what that means. Stay really positive about your projects, really focused on the most important things and work smart and hard. Here is the timetable for tomorrow evening. Come in pairs please, somebody will keep time. We all need to be more disciplined with our own and each other’s time at this stage of the semester.

Feedback for Madeline

Looks interesting, the seeds of a great subtle project are here.. The green wall is amazing

- contextualise the project much more and at multiple scales
- think through programming, how the centre functions educationally - it needs to be multilayered
- I think the programme could be more ambitious. This might be a significant rethink but I think you could do it simply whilst keeping much of what you have
- there are issues with scale and formality - many of the spaces and shapes need rationalising and to realise their location in the centre of the city, next to a cathedral with potentially your spaces seeing 300k people a year!!!
- need a lot more detail in drawings, they are currently at 1/200 as is the design
- the detail will be great when you do it, you must really study the heritage building in reality - go there again

I like it v much but it needs much much more depth! Keep going forwards only

Jack C interim slides

Hi Ammon,

Sorry for the delay, here are my slides from the interim crit sesh. Main comments are to design the courtyard and lane way and set the urban stage, using this as a way finding also to announce the entrance of the centre down the far end of the lane. Further refinement of structure for the urban stadium and interior materiality is also a focus. Any comments greatly appreciated!

And Tim, thank you for the Oslo Opera House link, looks amazing! lots of info too so will get into it!
